A fellowship experience with Princeton in Africa offers a unique chance for personal and professional growth. It’s often seen as a gateway into the field of development in Africa, fostering connections within a passionate alumni community.
The fellowship experience differs based on placement and organization. Some Fellows collaborate closely with supervisors or colleagues, while others work more independently. Placement locations vary from urban areas like Johannesburg and Nairobi to remote rural settings with limited resources.
Regardless of placement, all fellowships span 12 months and provide support from Princeton in Africa staff, alumni, and fellow Fellows. Community is a key aspect of the PiAf experience.
Expenses for the Fellowship:
Princeton in Africa views the fellowship as a joint investment by the Fellow, the hosting organization, and PiAf itself. The following funding arrangements apply:

- A $350 program placement fee upon acceptance
- Round-trip airfare to and from their host country
- Pre-departure medical expenses (immunizations, malaria prevention meds, personal meds, medical release form)
- Possible visa or work permit costs, depending on placement
Princeton in Africa/Fellowship Organizations cover:
- Housing and living stipend
- Certain visa/work permit expenses
- Medical, medical evacuation, and security evacuation insurance
- Pre-departure orientation housing and meals
- Partial travel allowance and mid-year Retreat expenses
Note: Fellowship packages vary by placement, and details are provided in the offer letter. Stipends are intended to cover living expenses directly related to the fellowship, not external costs or expenses in Fellows’ home countries.
