The Volkswagen Foundation offers an opportunity for exceptionally qualified, creative, and independent early career researchers to conduct their own research. It aims to encourage outstanding research personalities to embark on visionary, risk-taking research projects at the intersections of established fields.

Candidates must have obtained their doctorate no more than five years prior in related fields or disciplines. The fellowship is available for students interested in pursuing a research program at a university or research institution in Germany. It covers various disciplines and topics provided by the university.

Annually, ten to fifteen fellowships will be awarded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The initial funding period is five years, with projects receiving up to 1,000,000 Euro, covering the fellow’s position and relevant non-personnel costs.

Eligible applicants must have changed their academic environment by the time of the fellowship and fulfill specific language requirements if applying from outside their home country. The funding scheme is open to all junior researchers of all nationalities.

Applications must include a cover letter, project summary in German and English, a creative presentation of the project in layman’s terms, a schematic working plan and time schedule, list of references, and curriculum vitae. Applications are submitted electronically through the Volkswagen Foundation’s online application system.
