DATA PROTECTION: NDPC SIGNS MOU WITH NLRC, SMEDAN
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has entered into two notable Memoranda of Understanding with the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) to enhance data protection efforts across various sectors.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the national commissioner/CEO of NDPC, represented NDPC, while Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, director general of NLRC, and Mr. C, director general of SMEDAN, represented their respective agencies during the signing ceremony held at the Headquarters of SMEDAN and NLRC.
The collaboration with SMEDAN aims to promote data protection within the Small and Medium Enterprise ecosystem, which comprises approximately 40 million SMEs. The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration and includes the formation of a working group to focus on capacity building in data protection.
Dr. Olatunji expressed optimism about the implementation of the memoranda with the two strategic agencies, highlighting the importance of trust in data usage for sustainable growth.
The MoU with NLRC strengthens collaboration between the two commissions. Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, DG of NLRC, expressed gratitude for NDPC’s ongoing support and emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal data within the gaming ecosystem.
Dr. Olatunji reiterated the significance of this partnership, emphasizing the need to protect the personal data of approximately 60 million data subjects within the gaming sector and the importance of training NLRC staff and stakeholders on data protection principles.
Mr. Charles Odii, DG of SMEDAN, expressed appreciation for NDPC’s willingness to collaborate and stressed the importance of data protection and compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, for international business preparation.
These collaborations signify significant milestones in NDPC’s mission to promote data protection and privacy across various sectors in Nigeria. The commission remains committed to fostering partnerships that uphold individual rights and ensure responsible handling of personal data.
