NIMC SHOULD COME CLEAN ON XPRESSVERIFY ALLEGED ACCESS TO CITIZENS’ DATA – PIN
Paradigm Initiative has urged immediate action from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) following a significant privacy breach involving unauthorized access to citizens’ data through XpressVerify.com.
In correspondence with TECHECONOMY, the Civil Society Organization (CSO) highlighted that the breach violates both the National Data Protection Act (NDPA) and citizens’ constitutional right to privacy. It’s deemed as a clear violation of the law and a betrayal of public trust.
Paradigm Initiative stresses the critical need for intervention from NIMC and the Nigerian data protection commission (NDPC) to address this severe breach of citizens’ privacy rights.
The organization insists on a prompt investigation by NDPC into the matter, ensuring accountability for all parties responsible for compromising the security of the National Identity Database.
It emphasizes every Nigerian’s entitlement to trust in the security and protection of their personal information. Paradigm Initiative further demands that NIMC delineates actions to rectify the breach and prevent future occurrences.
The statement underscores the importance of NDPC taking decisive action to uphold data protection principles and safeguard citizens’ privacy rights as outlined in the NDPA and the constitution.
All these requests are detailed in the freedom of information request submitted by Paradigm Initiative. The organization affirms its commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure the protection of privacy rights for all citizens.
