The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has responded to reports concerning an alleged breach of citizens’ data by a private entity, XpressVerify.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 17, 2024, and signed by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, it was clarified that the Commission provides National Identification Number (NIN) verification and related services through authorized partners.
However, it was emphasized that XpressVerify is not among the Commission’s authorized partners.
The statement expressed gratitude to media partners and whistleblowers for highlighting the issue, assuring Nigerians and legal residents that there has been no data breach, and that citizens’ data remains secure within Nigeria’s National Identity Database.
Nevertheless, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, has promptly initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain whether any of the Commission’s Tokenisation verification agents violated licensing agreements, either directly or through sub-licensees.
Engr. Coker-Odusote reiterated NIMC’s commitment to data protection and privacy, emphasizing stringent security measures in place to safeguard citizens’ NIN and personal data.
The statement reaffirmed NIMC’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and accountability, underscoring the importance of preserving public trust in its operations.
Meanwhile, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has reportedly ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter, as reported by Techeconomy.
