SENATE PROBES N2TN ELECTRICITY SUBSIDY, REJECTS PROPOSED TARIFF HIKE

The Senate has mandated the power committee to investigate the N2 trillion required for electricity subsidy payments, outstanding debts in the sector, and the status of metering in the nation.

The upper chamber also opposed the Ministry of Power’s proposals to endorse proposed electricity tariff increases by distribution companies.

Additionally, the Senate rejected the removal of the electricity subsidy, considering the current hardships in the country.

The Senate urged the government to abandon the idea of raising electricity tariffs.

These decisions were reached after the Senate deliberated and approved a motion presented by Senator Aminu Abbas during the plenary, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining the electricity subsidy in the country for the foreseeable future.

Last week, Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, revealed during a press conference in Abuja that Nigeria might not sustain the current electricity subsidy payments.
