“INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: TINUBU, UN, OTHERS CELEBRATE WOMEN”
To commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, revealed the Nigeria for Women initiatives. These include the E-Market portal, the National Women Helpline, the Naija for Nigerian Women Brigade, and the Be Informed National Broadcast, introduced at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Representing the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, emphasized that the program launch demonstrates the President’s dedication to enhancing the lives of Nigerian women.
In their farewell addresses, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, praised the women’s affairs minister for her initiative and recommended establishing an accountable structure to ensure the intended improvement in the lives of women, especially those in rural areas.
UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, highlighted the importance of public and private investment in programs to end violence against women, ensure decent work, and promote women’s inclusion and leadership in digital technologies, peacebuilding, and climate action across all sectors of the economy in an opinion piece on 2024 IWD.
Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central), expressed concern over what he termed weak investment in women in Nigeria in a statement commemorating the 2024 International Women’s Day.
During a roundtable on ‘Prospects of Women Political Participation in Nigeria’ organized by CARE International-Nigeria, UK FCDO, and other partners, a group of northern women called for greater roles to contribute to regional and national developments, with the theme #InspireInclusion.
At a livelihood project exhibition in Kano organized by the Centre for Community Development & Research Network in partnership with UN Women, Dr. Olaniyi Aderigbe, the program analyst of UN Women, encouraged women to utilize the skills gained from UN Women projects to employ others, promoting self-reliance in society.
