WORLD INSTITUTE OF DISABILITY (WID) GLOBAL HEUMANN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2024 FOR DISABILITY LEADERS AND ADVOCATES

WID’s Global Heumann Fellowship Program aims to honor and extend Judy Heumann’s legacy by supporting disability leaders and advocates worldwide. Fellows will undertake projects that advance disability rights and disability justice in their regional communities, contributing to an equitable, inclusive, and just world. The fellowship, spanning twelve months, involves research, white paper writing, relationship building, collaboration support, and program development aligned with WID’s mission and strategic focus areas.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Disabled visionary leaders with a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in advocacy and communications within the disability rights movement.
  • Lived experience as a person with a disability.
  • Advocacy experience on global disability rights issues.
  • Flexibility to work effectively remotely and collaborate within a diverse, global team.
  • Commitment to part-time (~20 hours/week) engagement throughout the fellowship year.
  • Professional career within the disability rights field after the Fellowship.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong foundation of knowledge in disability and human rights advocacy.
  • Daily access to the internet, a personal computer, and a suitable work environment.
  • Willingness to work occasionally at non-standard hours, accommodating different time zones.
  • Availability on instant communication modes such as WhatsApp or Signal.
  • Significant experience in writing or publication on disability rights issues.

Timeline:

  • Part-time fellowship from July 2024 to July 2025.
  • Application/candidate review: April 1–30, 2024.
  • Notification to all applicants: May 2024.
  • Virtual interviews for finalists (using Zoom): May 2024.
  • Fellows’ acceptance notification: On or by June 7, 2024.

Location: Remote

Time Commitment: Part-Time (Up to 20 hours/week)

Term: July 2024 to July 2025

Note: WID members are currently working remotely throughout the United States, and the fellowship is entirely virtual.
