The International Scholarship Programme (ISP) of the Aga Khan Foundation presents a valuable opportunity for exceptional scholars from specific countries who lack alternative funding for their postgraduate studies. Originating in 1969 under the patronage of His Highness the Aga Khan, the AKF ISP has supported over 1,000 students to date.
Selection for these awards occurs annually through a competitive global application process, with a limited number of new awards available in each cycle.
(i) Currently, the AKF ISP is accessible in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda. (ii) For applicants in Canada, France, Portugal, and the USA, eligibility is extended to those originally from one of the countries listed in point (i).
Criteria for Eligibility: To qualify for an AKF ISP award, candidates must:
- Exhibit outstanding academic records.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/professional experience.
- Demonstrate genuine financial need.
- Formulate a comprehensive, reliable funding plan from multiple sources.
- Secure admission to a reputable postgraduate institution.
- Showcase strong leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular or entrepreneurial achievements, and volunteer contributions.
Note:
Preference is given to young professionals under the age of 30.
Award Conditions:
AKF ISP awards are structured as a combination of a grant and a loan, requiring the repayment of 50 percent of the award amount. Scholarships for Master’s studies cover the entire duration of the degree course, while for PhD students, scholarships are awarded for the initial two years, after which alternative funding sources are expected.
The award encompasses tuition fees and living expenses but excludes international travel costs, clothing, furniture, or living expenses for family members.
Maintaining an AKF ISP award necessitates demonstrating ongoing financial need and sustaining good academic standing throughout the postgraduate program.
