ABUJA RAIL PROJECT NEARING 95% COMPLETION, SET TO BE COMMISSIONED IN MAY – WIKE
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, provided an update on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) project, revealing that it is nearing 95% completion and is set to be inaugurated in May.
Wike shared this information during a visit by the Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Daniel Bertrand, in Abuja. The minister emphasized that completing the Abuja Light Rail project was essential for decongesting the city and improving public transportation.
President Bola Tinubu directed the acceleration of the project to ensure it becomes operational within his one-year tenure. Wike stated that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the company handling the project, has achieved nearly 95% completion.
He expressed confidence that, with continued progress, the light rail would be inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari in May. Additionally, Wike mentioned ongoing discussions with private investors to revolutionize public transportation in the FCT.
Recognizing the security challenges posed by unregistered public transport operators, Wike highlighted plans to construct taxi and bus terminals. These terminals would ensure that residents patronize registered and identified operators, contributing to improved public safety.
The construction of these terminals is expected to commence in the next month, pending approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement. The Belgium Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the developments in the FCT and indicated openness to partnerships for mutual benefits.
