ENSURING ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY SHOULD BE THE FOUNDATION OF RESTRUCTURING – ADESINA

The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, emphasized that the call for restructuring should be rooted in economic viability, not just political expediency. Speaking in Lagos after receiving the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, he underscored the importance of economic and financial sustainability as crucial conditions for political viability.

Adesina advocated for true federalism, fiscal decentralization, and enhanced accountability to tackle Nigeria’s economic and socio-political challenges. He urged sub-national governments to harness their potential for greater fiscal autonomy through prudent financial management.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, praised Adesina as a maverick change-maker and congratulated him on the leadership prize. The event was attended by prominent figures, including General Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Namadi Sambo, and others.
