HIAS INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 2025/2026 FOR SCHOLARS, ARTISTS AND CULTURAL PROFESSIONALS

The fellowship program targets exceptional scholars (minimum requirement: doctorate), as well as artists and cultural professionals of all career stages and nationalities. Key prerequisites for a research fellowship at HIAS include substantial scientific or artistic achievements, intellectual curiosity, and a heightened interest in other disciplines. Ideal candidates should embody the fundamental assumptions of their discipline, be open to engaging with topics beyond their own discipline, and willing to collaborate with Hamburg-based scholars or cultural professionals. Applicants enriching the fellow group and Hamburg’s role as a hub of science and culture with innovative ideas and strengthening international networks are highly desirable.

Emphasizing equal opportunity, HIAS welcomes applications from early career researchers, emerging artists, cultural professionals, and individuals from typically underrepresented regions globally.

Fellows reside and work in Hamburg during their fellowship, making projects feasible only if conducted on-site at HIAS or in collaboration with local partners.

The academic year at HIAS runs from September 1 to June 30 of the following year, offering a stay duration of 3 to 10 months. Fellowships can begin or end during the academic year, excluding July or August.

  4. Description of the planned project (max. 3 pages).
  5. Description of the project for a non-specialist audience (max. 1 page).
  6. Letter of recommendation from a Hamburg cooperation partner, if applicable
