2024 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS BY DAAD/NELGA

In the “Strengthening Advisory Capacities for Land Policy in Africa” (SLGA) program, the DAAD sponsors a fellowship initiative designed for young academics and professionals from African Union member states specializing in Land Governance and Land Management.

The program’s objective is to facilitate the implementation of enhanced land policies in selected African countries. Key areas of focus include supporting the African Land Policy Centre (ALPC) in establishing a Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to enhance training capacities in land management and land policy in Africa. Additionally, the program aims to promote demand-driven research in Africa, implement measures for monitoring and evaluation, and facilitate knowledge exchange in this domain.

Fellowships:

NELGA Postdoctoral Fellowships aim to promote demand-driven research and science communication on land governance in Africa. By selecting suitable candidates with an existing connection to central institutions of land policy in Africa, the fellowship program further strengthens institutional capacity for land governance and science-based land policy development. NELGA Short-Term Research Fellowships are available for young African researchers at the post-graduate level, reinforcing the need for open research topics and questions in the field of land management, land governance, and land policy in Africa.

Benefits of DAAD/NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships:

The basic fellowship includes:

  • A monthly rate of EUR 800
  • A virtual training workshop on Advocacy for Research Output In addition, support for the following may be granted upon request (subject to availability of funds):
  • Reimbursement of expenses for scientific publications in relevant journals, up to a maximum of EUR 1500.

Requirements for DAAD/NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships:

Applicants must:

  • Have completed their PhD degree at a state or state-recognized institution of higher education.
  • Have a background in land governance/land management or a related field (e.g., land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, geomatics).
  • Be nationals of an African country.
  • Be granted leave of absence by their home institution in case of conducting a field study or research stay abroad. Female applicants are encouraged to apply.
