“THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DEDICATED TO MAINTAINING RECIPROCALLY ADVANTAGEOUS TIES WITH CANADA, AFFIRMS AKUME.”
The commitment of the federal government to strengthening its ties with Canada for mutual economic gains in agricultural development has been affirmed. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), conveyed this commitment during a meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Jamie Christoff, accompanied by Mr Michael Murphy, the Canadian Political Attache to Nigeria.
Senator Akume highlighted the significant bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Canada, emphasizing that in 2022, Nigeria stood as Canada’s largest trade partner in Africa. The trade involved Canadian imports from Nigeria, amounting to approximately $1.7 billion, primarily in mineral fuels, oils, and cocoa.
Regarding the prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria, the SGF acknowledged the inherited situation but assured that the difficulties would be temporary. He expressed confidence in the government’s current economic policies, designed to mitigate the challenges and provide relief to the citizens.
