FCT REPORT: A MAJORITY HAVE ADOPTED ‘AWARA’ AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MEAT – VENDOR

Mrs. Hannatu Musa, a vendor of “Awara” in Bwari Area Council of the FCT, highlighted that an increasing number of individuals are opting to purchase Awara as an alternative source of protein derived from fish and meat.

Musa, who shared her insights on Wednesday, noted that due to the increasing unaffordability of meat, many individuals are turning to Awara as a viable substitute.

Awara, the Hausa equivalent of “tofu,” is a dish crafted from soybean curds. Soybean, being a protein-rich source with various vitamins and low carbohydrate content, makes Awara a nutritious choice.

In Northern Nigeria, Awara is a prevalent snack produced in block forms. Mrs. Musa emphasized its popularity in the North, attributing it to both its health benefits and appealing taste.

She explained, “I’ve learned that it is packed with protein and serves as an excellent alternative to meat for individuals looking to reduce their meat intake. I believe that’s why there has been an increase in patronage lately, with people of various ethnic backgrounds coming to buy the snack.”

Mrs. Musa also mentioned one customer who buys Awara for the entire family to incorporate into their meals, highlighting its meat-like texture and flavor. She emphasized its versatility, stating, “You can actually add it as an ingredient in soups and stews.”

Christine Douglas, an Awara consumer, shared her experience, revealing that she hadn’t tried it until she moved to Abuja five years ago. Introduced by her Northern neighbor, she has since become a regular buyer, even recommending it to other women. Douglas expressed, “It is very delicious if well prepared.
