The National Economic Council (NEC) has taken measures to address the economic challenges facing the nation, including ensuring the availability of fertilizer for farmers and establishing Agro-Rangers to address insecurity on farms.
The decision was made during the 139th meeting of the Council chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, held virtually on Thursday.
Vice President Shettima, noting that collective efforts and a clear roadmap are essential, directed a meeting with major fertilizer producers in the country. The Council emphasized the importance of fertilizer in agricultural productivity and urged state governors to adopt modern agricultural practices to enhance food productivity.
NEC also discussed the establishment of agro-rangers in the short term and the potential creation of state police in the long term to address security threats to farmers.
During the presentation on food security by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, concerns were raised about the dollarization of locally produced commodities affecting fertilizer prices and agricultural productivity.
Vice President Shettima called for sound economic decisions that align with the expectations of Nigerians. He emphasized the need for the government to redirect the economy for competitiveness and prosperity, acknowledging that Nigeria must evolve to keep up with the changing global economic order.
In his opening speech titled “It’s Time To Speed Up Our Prosperity Quest,” Vice President Shettima emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s desire for collective efforts to safeguard the nation’s economy. He stressed the importance of understanding the interconnectedness of economic dysfunctions and the need to address the tangible concerns of the common people.
Acknowledging the pervasive emergency the country is facing, Vice President Shettima urged state governors, ministers, and NEC members to align their actions with the reality on the ground.
