14-DAY EVICTION NOTICE SERVED TO HERDERS BY BENUE STATE GOVERNMENT

The Security Council of Benue State has issued a 14-day ultimatum to herders who are violating the state’s anti-open grazing law. They are instructed to cease grazing their animals outside ranches, or face consequences.

Governor Hyacinth Alia chaired the security council meeting, during which it was emphasized that herders must adhere to the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Law (2017) of the state, which remains in effect. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, announced the council’s decision at a press briefing at the Government House in Makurdi on Tuesday night.

A seven-man committee was formed to enforce the ultimatum, beginning on February 21st, 2024. The council also called on herders grazing openly in the state to leave immediately, warning those who invited them to stop such actions.

Citizens were urged to remain calm and vigilant as the government works to secure lives and property. The security council implored security agencies, traditional rulers, and the public to report anyone collaborating with armed herders.

The council acknowledged the nationwide challenges of hardship and impending food insecurity and assured the people of Benue State that the government is taking steps to address the issues.

Benue State, situated in the north-central region of Nigeria, has been grappling with herders/farmers conflicts for over a decade. The implementation of the anti-open grazing law has intensified the crisis in the state.
