WHY NIGERIAN STUDENTS HAVE DEVELOPED RELUCTANCE TOWARDS STUDYING IN THE UK

Visa restrictions, set to prevent Nigerians from bringing dependents to the United Kingdom, and the weakening of the naira, are identified as key reasons why Nigerians are seeking admissions in countries other than the UK. Official statistics released last week indicate a 46% decline in applicants from Nigeria, the steepest drop among all countries.

The reports note a significant decrease in Nigerian students pursuing undergraduate studies in the UK. Data from the UK Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS) for the 2024-25 academic year reveals a 1% decline in UK applicants, but overall numbers remain high. Dr. Jo Saxton, CEO at UCAS, emphasizes the availability of support and guidance for late applicants.

The declining interest in UK study programs is attributed to visa restrictions and the depreciation of the Nigerian naira. Italy, Finland, and Austria are becoming popular European destinations, while Australia and New Zealand are attracting increasing numbers of Nigerian students.

Canada emerges as a favored alternative, with a 44% increase in study permits issued to Nigerians in the first six months of 2023. The US also sees a 22.2% rise in Nigerian enrollment, making Nigeria the only African country among the top 10 countries with the highest number of students in America. From an entrepreneurial perspective, Mr. Olamide Awoyemi, CEO of Trail Business Travel Education and Consulting, warns of negative effects on the education consulting business, especially for professionals whose UK candidates constitute a significant portion of their clients. The UK’s review of the Graduate Route visa and potential changes to visa policies may further impact the appeal of UK universities to overseas students.
