Spiro, the largest electric vehicle (EV) player in Africa, has declared its entrance into the Nigerian market, introducing innovative electric bikes and advanced battery swapping technology in Ogun State.
The announcement follows the deployment of over 12,000 electric bikes across Africa, merely four months after a presidential launch in Kenya.
In collaboration with the Ogun State government, Spiro is taking significant steps towards adopting electric mobility, commencing with the introduction of their innovative electric bikes.
Lee Breheny, Head of Corporate Communications and Brand at Africa Transformation and Industrialization Fund, stated in a press release, “This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability across the state.”
To ensure the adaptability of electric bikes to local conditions, extensive test drives have been conducted in Abeokuta, with a focus on challenging terrains. Breheny emphasized the commitment to a smooth transition to electric vehicles (EVs), backed by comprehensive sensitization campaigns involving transport unions, commercial riders, and the Ministry of Transport.
Breheny also revealed, “To support the adoption of electric bikes, 13 swap stations have been established in pilot areas, with a goal to expand to 250 stations across Ogun State within six months.”
The launch in Ogun State marks the initial phase of Spiro’s ambitious plans to electrify Nigeria, the largest market in Africa. Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro, expressed excitement about the development, stating, “We have a collective vision to enhance the quality of life through sustainable transportation, making clean energy and sustainable transportation a reality for all Africans.”
