University of Pittsburgh Global Studies Center Awards H.J. Heinz Fellowships 2024

H.J. Heinz fellowships are given by the University of Pittsburgh‘s Global Studies Center to students from developing nations who want to pursue a master’s degree and show promise for becoming future leaders in the public, business, nonprofit, or governmental sectors.

The Fellow is required to address University members with at least one presentation on to a topic connected to their professional background during their residency. Furthermore, the Fellow is highly encouraged to engage in community outreach initiatives in the area by giving a talk to high school students or other interested individuals about their home country.

Fellows are expected to submit a final report detailing and assessing the entirety of their experiences and activities during the Fellowship, along with their intentions for returning home, upon the completion of the Heinz Fellowship program. These reports are then given to representatives of the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation and program authorities at the University of Pittsburgh. New Fellowship recipients will also consult these reports for references. The UCIS will award Fellows with a Heinz Program credential upon acceptance of their final report.

Benefits:

• Support is provided in the form of a $1,000 program and professional activities fund in addition to a $19,200 living stipend that is paid in monthly installments.

Responsibilities:

• Fellows are required to speak to University members on a minimum of one topic pertaining to their professional background during their residency.
• It is highly recommended that fellows participate in community outreach by giving talks to high school students or interested adults about their native country.
• The Fellow and the University enter into an agreement upon acceptance of the grant.
• Grantees are required to fulfill the whole duration of the award, with the exception of unanticipated circumstances.
• Grantees may be required to reimburse the university for any expenses incurred on their behalf in the event of an early termination or departure.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants need to fulfill the following requirements:

• Candidates must have been admitted to one of the following master’s programs: Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), School of Law, School of Education, or School of Nursing, starting with the academic year for which they are applying for the Heinz Fellowship.
• Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
• Candidates need to be fluent in writing, speaking, and reading English.
• Candidates who are just starting out or in the middle of their careers will be given preference.
• Those working in the practitioner and policy areas are the target audience for the fellowship.
• Basic academic research, academic sabbaticals, and medical research are not eligible for this prize.

Post-Fellowship Requirements:

Fellows who have finished their H.J. Heinz Fellowships are required to:

• Provide a thorough final report outlining their objectives and activities for the Fellowship when they return home.
• Reports are distributed to representatives of the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation and University of Pittsburgh programs, acting as references for newly appointed Fellows.
• The UCIS awards Fellows with a Heinz Program credential upon acceptance of the final report.
