TEESAS AIMS TO DIMINISH THE RATE OF FAILURE IN NIGERIA’S UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS

In 2023, only 14 out of every hundred students who participated in Nigeria’s university entrance exam passed, indicating a crisis in the education system. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examination Commission (WAEC) have observed increasing failure rates over the past five years. Teesas, an edtech startup established in 2021, aims to address this issue by analyzing a vast dataset of past questions spanning 40 years of JAMB exams.

While practicing past questions is not a new concept, Teesas sets itself apart by providing video tutorials from tutors along with the question bank. The startup operates on a subscription model, offering students access to video tutorials and the question bank for a one-time fee of ₦10,000, while a question bank-only option is available for ₦2,000.

To overcome internet challenges, Teesas also offers offline learning through its annual premium plan priced at ₦10,000. This plan enables students to access the app, save, and download video tutorials without an internet connection.

As WAEC considers transitioning to computer-based assessments for exams, Teesas is developing a new product called Matric to help students prepare for this shift. Matric will provide learners with over 5,000 tutor-led videos offering answers and tips to frequently asked SSCE and UTME questions from the last 40 years. The platform will also offer computer-based mock exams with detailed explanatory answers, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the new format.

Since its launch, Teesas has secured $2 million in funding and claims to have over 50,000 active users, with nearly 95% reporting significant improvement in their understanding of key concepts. The CEO, Izedonmwen, emphasizes the company’s impact-focused approach, tracking both profitability and impact metrics. The aim is to be a sustainable business, with a focus on profitable growth.
