Applications are now open for the 2025 Australia Awards Fellowships. Australia Awards Fellowships aim to build networks of influence and leadership by strengthening partnerships between Australian organisations and partner organisations in the region. Fellowships target senior and mid-career officials and professionals who are in a position to advance development outcomes in priority areas and increase the institutional capacity of partner countries through their leadership.

Award Type

Australia Awards Fellowships provide short-term opportunities for in-Australia study, research and professional development activities, hosted by Australian organisations – and do not lead to academic qualifications. Application rounds are held through a competitive selection process.

Fellow eligibility

Australia Awards Fellowships target senior officials and mid-career professionals, who, in the short to medium term, will be in a position to advance priority development and foreign affairs issues on their return home. To be eligible, all Fellows nominated by Australian organisations must:

  • be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the Fellowship
  • not be a permanent resident or be applying for permanent residency in Australia or partner of someone who is
  • be a citizen of an eligible country
  • not be current serving military personnel
  • be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Home Affairs for (DFAT sponsored) student visas subclass 500
  • be able to participate in the Fellowship.
  • be able to travel without family members as DFAT will only fund and provide visa support letters for individual Fellows, not their family members
  • Fellows with a disability that requires assistance must travel with a carer

Africa

Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Fellowship Award

Australian organisations can request funding of up to AUD $34,500 per Fellow, to a maximum of 15 Fellows to cover:

  • return air travel and relevant in-Australia travel
  • training costs
  • accommodation and living expenses
  • medical insurance costs when in Australia (for Fellowship holder only)
  • special assistance for people with disability
  • program overhead fee.

Priority areas

Fellowship programs must align with the following six development priority areas:

  • Climate change, adaptation, resilience and green energy transition (include critical mineral mining)
  • Gender equality, disability equity and social inclusion
  • Health
  • Digital Economy, cyber resilience, and media engagement
  • Maritime and the Blue Economy
  • Infrastructure and connectivity

Application Timeline:

  • 2 September 2024 (AEDT) – Applications open.
  • 13 October 2024 (11.59pm AEST) – Applications close.
  • From May 2025 – Round 20 outcome – successful and unsuccessful notifications made. Please note:  Feedback on unsuccessful proposals will not be provided.
  • From May 2025 – Grant payments made to Australia Awards Quad Infrastructure Fellowships Program.
  • From 21 July 2025 – Remaining Australia Awards Fellowship Round 20 grant payments made
  • From 30 June 2025 – Nominated and Reserve Fellow supplementary form opens.
  • Six (6) months prior to Fellow’s mobilisation to Australia/ start date in Australia – Nominated and Reserve Fellow supplementary form closes
