SUPER EAGLES: IWOBI’S PLEA MAY CONVINCE ADEYEMI, OLISE TO RETURN AFTER EURO 2024 SNUB

Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi was in the news last week after being snubbed by German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann for his Euro 2024 squad.

The 22-year-old forward has had an outstanding season for Dortmund, playing a key role in their journey to the UEFA Champions League final. He isn’t the only star to be overlooked for the Euros; France boss Didier Deschamps also snubbed the in-form Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise in favor of PSG winger Bradley Barcola.

Both Adeyemi and Olise are eligible to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria and still have a path back should they decide to make the switch. One player who faced a similar decision was Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi, who chose Nigeria over England.

In a recent interview with Hotsports Nigeria, Iwobi explained his choice. “I don’t have any regrets. I respected England and they gave me a lot of opportunities. But I feel more at home with Nigeria. I represent my family and my culture. I’ve grown up in a Nigerian environment, so I have no regrets about picking Nigeria over England,” he said.

“I’ve been here for a while now and I’m familiar with the team. Even from my first time here, they made me feel welcome. I enjoy myself not just in matches but also in training. In the camp, it’s like one big family, making it easier for me to express myself and fit in.”

Iwobi’s words are particularly relevant given the recent snubbing of Olise and Adeyemi. The chances of Adeyemi becoming a regular for Germany are slim, due to the abundance of attacking talent at Nagelsmann’s disposal. Olise, despite his talent, is low in the pecking order in France, and playing for a club like Crystal Palace could further diminish his chances.

While these players are free to make their decisions, following Iwobi’s example might be wise to avoid spending the next few years on the fringes, especially with the next World Cup just two years away.
