2024 JOINT JAPAN/WORLD BANK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM | HOW TO APPLY

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program welcomes applications from citizens of specific developing countries with relevant professional experience and a track record of contributing to their countries’ development initiatives. Eligible candidates should be applying for a master’s degree program in a development-related field.

The World Bank extends scholarships to students and young researchers, aligning with its mission to foster innovative approaches to capacity development and knowledge sharing in the developing world.

Key Details of the Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship Program:

Subject to available funding, JJWBGSP offers scholarships for 52 Participating Programs at universities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan, focusing on crucial areas such as economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

To align with the academic calendar of JJ/WBGSP Participating Programs, the application process is organized in two rounds:

Application Window #1:

• January 15 to February 29, 2024, at 12:00 noon EST
• JJ/WBGSP Participating Programs accepting applications under Window #1
• Announcement of selected applicants by the end of March 2024

Application Window #2:

• March 25 to May 24, 2024, at 12:00 noon EST
• JJ/WBGSP Participating Programs accepting applications under Window #2
• Announcement of selected applicants towards the end of June 2024

Upon completion of their degree, scholars from developing countries commit to returning to their home country to apply their newfound skills and contribute to social and economic development.

Eligibility Requirements for the 2024 Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship Program:

Applicants must:

• Be a national of a World Bank member developing country.
• Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
• Be in good health.
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date.
• Possess 3 years or more of recent development-related work experience after earning a Bachelor’s degree.
• Be employed in development-related work in a paid full-time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application, with at least 3 years of paid development-related employment since earning a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) within the past 6 years from the Application Deadline.

Benefits of Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship Program:

Recipients receive:

• Economy class air travel between their home country and the host university at the start and end of the study program, along with a US $500 travel allowance for each trip.
• Tuition coverage for the graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance obtained through the university.
• Monthly subsistence allowance during the scholarship period, covering living expenses (accommodations, food, etc.), with the amount varying depending on the host country.

Note: All JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.
